The idea that what Marx called the "age of primitive accumulation" has been transcended is now officially dead. Primitive accumulation will apparently persist for the lifetime of the capitalist system. Go ahead, Marxist readers; send me your theories!

Apologists for the slaughter and conquest of the native peoples on the American continents typically claim that "that era is over, let's put it all behind us"; we can now note with certainty that it's not really over, because the conquerers are still being awarded the imprimaturs of legitimacy for their acts of conquest. Once a settler society, always a settler society? Oh sure, Iraq was just for the oil -- but they killed a lot of people and they're still in it to stay. What will they take next?
